What happens after I reach out?

We will set up a free 15-minute video consultation or schedule your first session, depending on your preference. You will indicate your preference via email or through the online booking option and then you will select a time on the schedule. From there, new clients will receive an email to set up a client portal account from Sessions Health which will walk them through the process of filling out the paperwork and setting up everything they need to become a new client. Those that just want a consultation will receive a link for the virtual session after we've selected a time.

What should I expect from counseling?

Therapy involves a collaborative process between a client and a trained therapist aimed at improving mental health and well-being. Clients can expect a supportive and confidential environment in therapy where they can openly explore their thoughts, emotions, and concerns. A therapist will actively listen, provide empathy, and work collaboratively to understand the client's unique experiences and challenges. Together, they will set goals and develop personalized strategies to address issues, improve coping skills, and enhance self-awareness. Therapeutic techniques are tailored to address specific issues or goals identified by the client. Therapy may involve learning new perspectives, practicing effective communication, and exploring deeper emotions or patterns of behavior. Ultimately, clients can anticipate gaining insights, developing healthier ways of thinking and relating to others, and achieving meaningful personal growth and change over the course of their therapeutic journey. Sessions are largely driven by the client's goals and the client determines what is worked on and when. 

What should I expect in the first session?

The first session will be 80 minutes long so that there is adequate time for me to get to know you and what brings you in. We will be discussing various things from the intake forms you fill out prior to us meeting. It's a time for us to start to get to know one another and for you to ask any questions you may have.

How long can I expect to come to therapy?

There is no definitive answer to this question. Though it's safe to say more than a session or two is necessary to make any headway on what brings someone in, some individuals find a few sessions are sufficient, while others choose to continue long-term (over 20 sessions).

Often folks choose to continue to work with me through additional items as they arise, while others choose to address additional items outside of the therapeutic context. There isn't necessarily a correct answer, but we can collaborate together to help you make the ultimate choice for yourself.

Do you incorporate any spirituality into sessions?

This is up to each client. I accept all types of clients and do not impose any specific beliefs. If a client is spiritual or has a relationship with a higher power, my goal is to honor that and incorporate that into our sessions as much or as little as they would like. On the other hand, I want to be a safe space to clients wanting to process religious trauma or abuse, or otherwise process difficulties with faith or religion. 

What's the difference between a therapist, counselor, psychologist, and psychiatrist?

A therapist is a general term for someone who facilitates talk therapy. This could be a counselor, social worker, or a psychologist. A counselor is someone that has specialized training in mental health and psychotherapy or talk therapy. A licensed professional counselor is licensed by a professional board in their state. Psychologists hold doctoral degrees in psychology and focus on assessing, diagnosing, and treating mental health disorders through therapy and psychological testing. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in psychiatry, treating mental health conditions with a combination of therapy and medication, as they are licensed to prescribe drugs.

What does it mean to see a pre-licensed therapist?

Becoming a licensed therapist takes a long time and a lot of work! A large part of how therapists hone their practice is through providing quality therapy services while under supervision with a more seasoned therapist. A pre-licensed therapist has completed a Master's degree and their pre-grad internship which is two years of working one-on-one with clients while being carefully supervised by experienced supervisors. Pre-licensed therapists are counselors who have completed these requirements and are now gaining experience in order to qualify for a state license while under supervision. Supervision includes regularly meeting with an approved supervisor to confidentially discuss client needs and receive guidance and support in their therapy practice. I'm currently working towards becoming licensed under the supervision of Brooke Lamb, LMFT, license #1392.

What is your refund or cancellating policy?

Sessions canceled 24 hours or more in advance will not receive a late cancellation charge. Sessions canceled with less than 24 hours notice will still be required to pay the full session cost. Exceptions are given for emergency situations. Clients can cancel via email or the client portal.
